Casa Verde represents a careful study in how architecture can amplify the experience of place. Perched on a dramatic cliffside overlooking the Atlantic, the residence is designed to frame and celebrate its extraordinary setting while providing shelter from Madeira's seasonal winds.
The house is organized as a series of pavilions connected by glass corridors, allowing each space to capture specific views and light conditions throughout the day. Large sliding glass walls dissolve the boundary between interior and exterior, while deep overhangs and vertical timber screens provide shade and privacy when needed.
Material choices respond to the coastal environment: board-formed concrete walls anchor the building to the cliff, naturally weathering to blend with the surrounding rock. Local timber screens and decking add warmth, while large format glazing captures panoramic ocean views.
Design Approach
The design process began with extensive site analysis, studying wind patterns, sun paths, and the relationship between the cliff and ocean. Early schemes explored various configurations before arriving at the pavilion concept, which allows the building to follow the natural contours of the land.
Sustainability was integrated from the start: cross-ventilation reduces cooling needs, thermal mass moderates temperature swings, and the building's orientation maximizes passive solar gain in winter while providing shade in summer.
